3D SVG Icons for i2’s Intelligence Analytics Software
How we helped i2 Group reinvent their Analyst’s Notebook link analysis software’s iconography with modern, inclusive and scalable 3D SVG Icons, fit for a product used by intelligence and law enforcement agencies globally.

Designing at Scale
i2 is a global leader in intelligence analytics software, trusted by law enforcement and intelligence agencies worldwide. Their platform enables analysts to identify critical links between people, events and places, leaving ‘bad actors’ nowhere to hide. But with such responsibility comes the need for clarity, consistency, and precision in every detail, especially the icon design.
As part of a major rebrand, i2 returned to Creative Freedom to modernise over 600 custom icons. The existing iconography, created over many years and by multiple teams, had become inconsistent. Some icons looked dated, others used colour schemes that no longer fit the brand or global accessibility expectations. Our brief was to unify the entire set in a modern style, combining 2D and 3D SVG icons that would be scalable, flexible, and future-proof.

The Trouble With People
Designing icons for investigative software used by law enforcement and government agencies comes with challenges, but none as politically complex or technically nuanced as the “people” icons.
Comparing the before and after icons for ‘People’ is an ideal demonstration of the transition from a detailed and more realistic 3D rendered Bitmap style (Which we originally created over 10 years ago) to a cleaner and more modern scalable 3D SVG icon illustration. The new icons are not only simpler and easier to interpret at smaller sizes but also have the advantage of scaling more cleanly, being lighter in file size and easily adjusted by the software itself if required, meaning colour changes or overlays can be applied programatically.
Removing unecessary detail was crucial to improving scalability and improving UX
The existing set used red to signify female subjects, which in UX terms reads as alert, danger or warning. Our task was to establish a palette that clearly conveyed gender or anonymity without invoking subconscious bias. The default “anonymous” icon was also problematic, depicting a white male, so removing racial and gender cues was a priority for developing a more accurate and unbiased representation.
We replaced red with softer, more neutral colour tones, created a new genderless icon, and ensured the skin tones across all icons avoided real-world racial implications. Every human figure was stripped of identifiable features, no hair texture, facial details, or gendered clothing. Even whether to show a bust-line for the female icon became a debated detail, considering the importance of representing all genders fairly.

Inclusive Design Considerations
We created every icon as an SVG Icon file, which enabled seamless scaling from small chart overlays to full-screen interface elements. Each icon followed a strict visual system, shared vanishing points, consistent lighting angles, and stylised realism that preserved the recognisability of real-world objects without clutter or stereotype.
Icon Manager reduces review time and revisions by 50%
Daily feedback loops through our Icon Manager platform kept the project on track. i2’s stakeholders could review batches in real time, tag revisions, and approve completed sets without delays or version conflicts.
Icon manager provides instant access to every aspect of the project, for everyone.
Outcomes and Trust
We delivered over 600 new and updated icons, each one ready for programmatic styling and easy updates. The in-app experience is cleaner, more intuitive and aligned with the trust that i2’s clients place in their tools.
The response from internal users and customers has been overwhelmingly positive. Importantly, the consistency of the iconography now reflects the professional quality of the software.
The i2 software is trusted by serious professionals. Our icons had to uphold that trust. For Creative Freedom to be chosen as i2’s design partner across 2 decades, is something we’re immensely proud of.

i2 engaged with Adam and Creative Freedom to create a new set of 2D & 3D icons in SVG for use within our investigative/analysis products.
These icons needed to represent real world items. Adam’s team of icon designers produced some wonderful designs that were iterated over easily and quickly using Icon Manager.
It was a pleasure to work with them on this year-long project. I highly recommend them to others, and I’m sure we will use them again in the future.”
